Halloween
Halloween is celebrated on the night of October 31.
Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, ghost tours,
fancy dress costume parties, visiting haunted houses, and carving jack-o-lanterns.
The word
Halloween appears to come from the Catholic Church's "All Hallows Eve". November 1 is "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day") which is a Catholic day of observance in honour of saints. In the 5th century Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31.
One theory is thought that on that day, the disembodied spirits of everyone who had died throughout the year would come back to find and possess living bodies for the following year. On the night of the 31st October, the spirit world could move around in the living world. People did not want to be possessed; so on that night, people extinguished their fires, to make their homes cold and uninviting. They would then dress up in ghoulish costumes and paraded around the community to frighten away the spirits looking for bodies to possess.
